Help an english guy with a Chinese translation

I posted this on the main Ottawa forum but didn't get many responses so I thought I would try here. If you can help me with this I would be happy to help you with anything you need to treanlate from english. Here is the email with the attachment below.

Can anyone help me translate what this says (the traditional chinese characters on the left)? This was a letter mailed in the late 1800's and I am trying to figure out what it says. I asked a few Chinese friends but they weren't entirely sure.
