Man, 20, arrested in connection to driving test assault
WINDSOR, Ont. -- Police have arrested a 20-year-old Tecumseh man who allegedly beat up a DriveTest examiner over a failed driving test.
According to Windsor police spokesman Sgt. Brett Corey, the suspect was apparently enraged that the tester had not passed the suspect’s girlfriend.
“Some words were exchanged regarding the failed test,” Corey said. “(The suspect) basically jumped him — assaulted him, struck him several times about the face.”
The incident happened around 3:15 p.m. Wednesday in the parking lot of the DriveTest centre at 2470 Dougall Ave.
Corey said the 50-year-old male examiner had completed testing of a 21-year-old female and determined that she did not meet the requirements.
The examiner was about to begin testing another driver when the woman’s boyfriend confronted him. An argument ensued, culminating in violence.
“(The suspect) had the examiner down on the ground,” Corey said. “(The victim) received some facial injuries that required stitches.”
Corey said the driver who was waiting to be tested got out of his vehicle and pulled the attacker off the bleeding victim.
The suspect returned to his own vehicle in which his girlfriend was waiting and they left the area.
Paramedics were called to the scene. The victim was taken to hospital for treatment.
Corey said police learned the identities of the suspect and his girlfriend.
On Thursday morning, an investigator obtained an arrest warrant for the suspect.
The man was apprehended later in the day, and remained in custody overnight for arraignment on Friday.
It’s expected he will be charged with assault causing bodily harm.
“All indications from all witness statements — everybody says the same thing,” Corey said. “That this guy confronted the examiner about his girlfriend’s test and why (the examiner) failed her. He wasn’t happy about it, so he attacked (the victim).”
Staff at the DriveTest centre would not comment and directed all queries to a spokesman at the Ontario Ministry of Transportation.
Ministry spokesman Bob Nichols said the injured examiner is an employee of DriveTest, a private company contracted by the government, and the ministry will not comment on the incident.
