My personal experience: recently I was looking for an auto-shop to get my brakes done on my Toyota, I droved all the way to Midas (won't mention which one in the Chinatown area:D), so, of course they told me that they would have to do a brake inspection on the vehicle and if I decided to get the service done, they would waive the fee. After the inspection, they told me I would need to surface my rotors (or replace them in the front with additional costs of course), and replace my brake pads (they also mentioned about servicing front calipers). I asked for a price quote, these are the quotes I get:
F BK pads
F Rtrs
Sanding Disc (Rtrs)
BK Solvent & Lube
F Calipers
BK(Brake)
Clean & Adjst R BK
=$733.31 CAD
Without the F Rtrs(Front Rotors)
=$596 CAD
Eventually I paid the inspection fee of $59.83 CAD (49.95+2.99environmental fees and taxes) and ran out of the place, never figured out what that environmental fee was for, since there was nothing to be disposed!!??
My BEST suggestions to every car lovers here!! If you need to get to brakes or even auto services done and done right...drive youself an hour down South to Ogdensburg, NY...you will save tones of $$.
I drove down to Ogdensburg, NY the next day and had my complete brakes done (with a promotion of lifetime* brake pads replacement for free, just pay for labor) at this well known auto shop called MONRO for only $163.71 USD, taxes included. Oh, they also surfaced my rotors included in the price!! So compare $163.71 USD to $596 CAD, you make the choice!! I am certainly happy with mine!!!

Which one? The price quoted in Canada or the price paid in the U.S.?
For your question, it is simply by logic...in Canada, everything you buy, you gotta pay for GST and PST, which we all know that adds up to be 13%, and the fact that the price that I was quoted at MIDAS-$222.70 CAD for parts and $289.90 CAD for labour that promted me to call elsewhere. Monroe down in Ogdensburg, NY was the first and only one that I have called and ask about the quote based on the inspection results that I have gotten from MIDAS, when they told me around $150 USD, I booked the apptmnt right there for the next day! Of course I ended up paying more than I supposed to, in total at the end...$59.83 CAD plus $163.71 USD, but I am sure glad that I didn't ended up paying $596 CAD for the brake service!! Just thought I would share to save ppl money, so ppl could ended up spending less than what I have spent! There are a few more autoshop in Ogdensburg, NY which I never called...just remember, always call a few shops and maybe different regions to do comparison...it sure might just save you lots of money at the end!

Thank you and that's right, I don't care if it is the U.S. or Canada, if it saves me money and the service is the same or better, then it is to my benefit to make for the better choice! Just thought I would share and let everyone know...so they have the option if they wanted! :)

One of the big internet, TV, phone services providers crossing the border to here is not what you expected.

The subject is that American service provider (any service provider) is better than that of Canadian. I am suggesting that this may not be true. You gotta put on your reading glasses. Got it?

It is a case by case scenario, I agree with you on "not all things are cheaper in the U.S.", but in my case on the auto repair, well, at least the brake service part, I found it much cheaper to get it done at cross the border. That is what's so great about this blog, that we all could share information and letting people know where they can find a good deal, in my case, it turned out to be the brake services. Don't you agree? :)

No worry. I agree with you. Thanks for sharing.

Won't you want to share with readers the phone number and if possible, the address of the auto shop that you went? If this is inconvenience, please QQH me. Thanks.

Sure, that is the whole point of sharing any money saving tips to all the car lovers (and money lovers...of course) out there!!

The place is called Monro Muffler/Brake & Service, their website is www.monro.com and phone number is (315)393-4015 and their address is 730 Canton Street, Ogdensburg, NY. (I got all these info from the receipt) It is right next to Burger King.

There is also a Walmart in the town nearby, so while waiting, if someone can drop you off at the Walmart store...it would be even better!!

Can any good car lovers recommend a auto detail store here in Ottawa?

如果LZ直接drove down to Ogdensburg, NY the next day and had my complete brakes done,
LZ就不必Eventually I paid the inspection fee of $59.83 CAD (49.95+2.99environmental fees and taxes) and ran out of the place

"$59.83 CAD"+"检查所花费的时间"+"问题没解决"~= "一场恶梦"

Your 汉语表达 has NO 问题 except that your thought is not quick and deep enough. :D

Now, I finally see the point: $59.83 CAD=
