One of 40 people left homeless after Monday's night's three-storey apartment blaze in Gatineau said he was denied fire insurance.
Time is ticking down for Jiya Liao and his girlfriend who are being housed by the Red Cross for up to 72 hours -- after that, they have nowhere to go.
In fact, all but five of the residents affected required the help of the Red Cross.
Liao said he lived at 95 Eddy St. in Gatineau's Hull sector for the past four years. The unemployed recent computer programming college graduate lost all his belongings, including five computers, a pet cat and a fish.
He and his girlfriend, currently working towards her master's degree, also lost all their paperwork and identification.
"I had no insurance. I tried to buy it, but they wouldn't sell it to me," said Liao, who figures that decision had something to do with frequent false fire alarms at his apartment building.
He said the fire broke out around 6 p.m. Monday and burned steadily for four hours.
"I saw it last night -- smoke coming from the windows and the ceilings on the second floor were burning," he said, adding his apartment was on the top floor.
According to Gatineau fire officials, the building housed 12 apartments and five businesses. The neighbouring building at 28 Vaudreuil was also affected. Combined, the damage is estimated around $2 million.
So far, the cause of the fire -- which started between the second and third floors -- has been ruled accidental.
No one was injured.
