Jail for man who drove 23 years without licence
An eastern P.E.I. man who has been driving without a licence for 23 years was sentenced to 45 days in jail by a provincial court judge in Georgetown Thursday.
Kenneth Blackett, 45, of Mount Hope, has not had a driver's licence since 1987, and has been caught driving at least 10 times since then, sometimes while he was drunk.
Most recently Blackett was pulled over by RCMP in St. Peters in November. When police ran the plate number it wasn't registered to the vehicle he was driving. A check on the driver, showed Blackett had no licence and no insurance.
He also has unpaid fines totalling more than $7,300.
Blackett's lawyer told the court his client works as a carpenter but only makes about $400 a week, just enough to support his family but not enough to pay his fines. He asked that Blackett be allowed to serve his time on weekends so he could continue to work.
"Why in the world would I give a fellow a weekend sentence when he owes thousands of dollars in fines he hasn't paid, and he continues to drive an unregistered, unlicensed and uninsured vehicle," said Judge Nancy Orr.
"This will be difficult for your employer and your family but these are choices you made a long time ago."
Orr said she hopes time behind bars will convince Blackett to change his behaviour. She also sentenced him to a probation term of two years.
She warned Blackett if he's caught driving when he is released from jail, he will find himself back behind bars.
