From the information we could obtain we believe it is possible for a driver with a G2 to purchase a vehicle. In Ontario, insurance companies typically will allow you to insure your vehicle as the principal driver with a G2 license, though you should check and make sure that this is possible without having a fully licensed G driver on the policy with you.
It is also possible to rent a car with a G2, at least with some rental car agencies. For example Avis is aware that British Columbia, Ontario, Nova Scotia, New Brunswick and Newfoundland have a graduated licensing system for newly licensed drivers.
The Avis rental site notes that only the following graduated license are acceptable for car rental in Canada:
British Columbia, Nova Scotia and Newfoundland - Class 5
New Brunswick - Class 7 (level 2 only) and Class 5
Ontario - Class G and G2
At most Avis locations in Canada, the minimum age to rent an Avis vehicle is 25.In certain situations or at certain locations, the minimum age may be 21. In some instances a surcharge may apply for renters under age 25.
Since rental car agencies guidelines for renting vehicles to those without a full license can differ, be sure to check with any rental car agency that they will accept your G2 license before making plans to rent a vehicle from them.
