417 westbound re-opened after major collision
By Kristy Nease, The Ottawa CitizenMarch 14, 2010
OTTAWA — A 65-year-old woman is in critical condition after her red Honda Civic rear-ended an Ottawa Police Services canine tactical unit vehicle on Highway 417 westbound, just west of the Woodroffe exit, late Saturday night, paramedics say.
A call about the accident came in just after midnight, said Ottawa paramedics spokesman François Côté early Sunday morning. The woman was trapped in her car unconscious for about 20 minutes while firefighters performed an extraction.
She has been transported to the Ottawa Hospital's Civic campus trauma centre with right-side head trauma, a fractured right orbital bone just above her eye and arterial bleeding in the right orbital area, Côté said.
A lone male police officer, 38, who was traveling in a black Chevrolet Tahoe with two police dogs, was taken to hospital as a precaution after being assessed at the scene for a minor scalp laceration, Côté said. The two dogs were taken to a local veterinarian, also as a precautionary measure, he said.
Highway 417 westbound was closed from the Maitland exit to the Pinecrest and Greenbank exit Saturday night and was re-opened at about 10 a.m. Sunday morning.
The Special Investigations Unit is investigating.
