ants problem for Interlock patio

I just found that there are some ants working hard on my new interlock patio. The sand between the bricks were dug out by ants. When I swept the sand back in, I could tell the little ant hole is quite deep.

My questions are:

1. I asked the contractor to use the glue/sticky sand to seal the spaces between bricks. Why can the ants get through.

2. How to get rid of ants.

I got the same problem but is small and I am going to do the sand again to reduce the problem and I am also going to visit Canadian Tire store to see if there is something to spray to get rid off the ants.
