OTTAWA — The Mounties are trying to assess the credibility of a report claiming a dozen Canadians in Pakistan are being trained by al-Qaida to launch attacks in Canada.
The report published in the Asia Times - citing “well-placed Taliban sources”- said a group of 12 Canadians are in terrorist training in the North Waziristan area of Pakistan.
The Canadians, according to a Pakistan militant, arrived in Afghanistan for “basic jihad training” last February. After nine months they were sent to Pakistan for special courses, the report alledged.
“Their main learning is how to use sophisticated weapons and how to connect with local smuggling networks in North America. They are also learning how to use ordinary material like sugar and basic chemicals to make powerful explosives. These militants will then return to their country to execute al-Qaida's plan of targeting big cities in Canada," militant Arif Wazir told the Asia Times.
The Asia Times report alledged some of the Canadians undergoing training are Jeam Paull (Sadiq Ullah), Leman Langlois (Sana Ullah), James Richard (Abdur Rehman), Otto Paul (Abu Usman), Thomas (Abdullah) and Paul Gall (Hafiz Ullah).
RCMP Assistant Commissioner Gilles Michaud said the Mounties are trying to assess the report's credibility.
The RCMP is contacting law enforcement partners and security and intelligence agencies “before we can say how serious this is or not," he said.
“Part of the process is to look at the cited names and compare those to our holdings and see if they match,” Michaud told QMI Agency. “If there is cause for concern for the public, they will be informed."
Michaud said last summer, the RCMP was greatly concerned increasing numbers of Canadians were becoming radicalized, leading Canada to become an exporter of terrorism.
