UPS Shipping

That's right. If it's not urgent, using USPS (not UPS) is the best choice.

UPS, FedEx, DHL...)

Insurance only covers your claimed amount. If you claim $20 for an item and it is lost on its way, you can only ask for $20 even though you paid $200.

That's why some sellers do not want to lower the claimed value.

I bought a lot of stuff on ebay or from US. Most of the time I chose USPS and they only charge 15% HST. UPS ground is to avoid due to extra fees but I was told that UPS Expedited are fine.

True, but my point to lower the item value is to avoid package being inspected not for insurance purposes. However, if you go back to my point 5, in the scenario that if I HAVE TO buy from this seller (either he/she is the only seller who has the product that I wanted or the only seller who would ship it internationally) who can not accommodate my requests, I am willing to take the risk of package being inspected by claiming the full value of the item, and in this case, I would pay for the insurance.

Just something for reference:
This happened over 6 years ago, I won the bid for an evening gown on eBay for US$400. The seller sent a huge package by FedEx, claimed full retail value of the gown on the shipping slip which is US$800. Because in her mind, she was thinking the insured value if, in the worse case, the package get damaged or lost.

Almost 2 weeks later, FedEx left a note on my frontdoor telling me that I have to go to their outlet centre to pick up the package. When I got there, I was told to pay CAD$430 (taxes + brokages) before I can pick up the package. That is 40% of the claimed value!! Of course, I did not pay at that time. I had to call the seller to send a letter/fax to FedEx headquatre in the US, stating that I am the original owner of the dress and that she borrowed it from me to wear at a wedding. Now that she is "returning" the dress to me. And the claimed amount was the value of the dress and not an actual payment transaction. They seemed to buy my story, but since FedEx has already opened the package, they still appraised the item at an 'used' value, plus the brokage fee, I had to pay CAD$150 before I can have the dress. It's still quite a bit of money, but much better than $430 and I had to wear the dress on that weekend.

So, yes, I learnt it the hard way! And my stories can go on and on...:o
