Kid syrup tainted with plasticizer

A British pharmaceutical firm faces possible prosecution in Hong Kong after tests showed a paediatric syrup manufactured in its French factory contained twice the allowable limit for a plasticizer.

Middlesex-registered GlaxoSmithKline is the latest corporation and the biggest so far to get embroiled in the Taiwan-originated scare involving plastic additives in food and drugs.

The Department of Health yesterday ordered the firm to recall the French-manufactured Augmentin powder for syrup 156mg/5ml (HK-24658) after traces of DIDP were found in tests.

The popular first-line antibiotic for children was found to contain 18 parts per million of Diisodecyl phthalate, twice Europe's "specific migration limit" of 9ppm for DIDP for food contact materials.

The Augmentin powder for syrup 457/5ml manufactured in Britain did not have any trace of DIDP. Both contained flavouring agents, suspected to be the main source of contamination.

The department has already notified the Drug Regulatory Authority in France.

"The source of DIDP is yet to be investigated by the manufacturers," a spokeswoman said.

About 400 children treated at Hospital Authority clinics and hospitals have been prescribed the drug and still have it on hand.

Patients have been advised "not to stop using the drug abruptly."

Stopping antibiotics in mid-course could lead to antibiotics resistance and superbug infections, already a major problem in Hong Kong because of the overprescription of antibiotics.

Animal studies suggest that long-term use of the plasticizer-laced antibiotics, used widely in Hong Kong for treating respiratory, gastrointestinal and abdominal bacterial infections in children, could also be harmful to the liver.

"It is a fact that the department has not received any report of adverse events related to the product, but GlaxoSmithKline has failed to demonstrate the safety of the tainted product to our satisfaction. The threat to public health cannot be ruled out as this stage," a department spokesman said.

He added the Public Health and Municipal Services Ordinance on the sale of the product "might have been contravened."

Those convicted face a fine of up to HK$10,000 and three months' imprisonment. The matter will be referred to the Department of Justice, he said.

GlaxoSmithKline said it was recalling the product. It claimed the level of exposure is "significantly lower than the levels that the US and European authorities deem to present a level of risk."

It said phthalates, to which DIDP belong, are "ubiquitous and are present as trace compounds in the environment."

Society of Hospital Pharmacists vice president William Chui Chun-ming said Augmentin could be replaced with generic antibiotics.

"Other local and international drug companies should assure safety of their Augmentin by providing certificates," he said.
