A Ph.D position in the Department of Earth Sciences is available for a highly motivated and talented graduate student to investigate the impact of agricultural drainage system on greenhouse gas emissions. Carbon and nitrogen cycling processes in the air-plant-soil-groundwater continuum will be investigated via field monitoring, stable isotope analysis, labelling experiments and modelling work. Through the study, the best water management practice will be developed to reduce greenhouse gas emissions and ensure water quality and yield benefits.

This position requires a solid background in environmental geochemistry or an inter-disciplinary background in biogeochemistry, soil chemistry, geosciences, geomicrobiology and a strong interest in the application of isotope techniques and studies. In our department, an extensive range of research facilities via G.G Hatch isotope lab, noble gas lab and geochemistry lab are available to students. Ph.D students would be expected to take the opportunity to learn the techniques and develop the expertise.

The position is fully funded by a federal government project at a minimum of three years and available immediately. Applications will include a cover letter, CV, a statement of research interests, and names/addresses of 2-3 referees.

Applications and inquiries regarding this opportunity should be submitted by email to Dr. Ian D Clark (Department of Earth Sciences, University of Ottawa, idclark@uottawa.ca; http://mysite.science.uottawa.ca/idclark/).

Review of applications will continue until the position is filled.
