Cape Breton Trip 2012

Ottawa=>Woodstock (day1)=>Cheticamp (day2)=>Pleasant Bay (day3)=>Ingonish (day4,5)=>Baddeck (day6)=>Peggy’s Cove & Halifax (day7)=>Quebec City (day8)=>Ottawa (day9)

Day 1: Ottawa to Woodstock, NB (910 km)
· Left Ottawa at 8:30 am, arrived in Woodstock around 7:00 pm, and stayed at a motel for the first night.

Day 2 – Woodstock to Cheticamp (750 km)
· Woodstock to Cheticamp (the west entrance to the Cape Breton Highlands National Park)
· Arrived in Cheticamp around 5 pm and stayed at the Merry's Motel for the night. Merry Motel is very clean and provides nice free breakfast. It should be recommended.
· Walking along the harbor after two days (about 19 hours) of driving was a great pleasure and relaxation.
· Lobster dinner at Le Gabriel restaurant (http://www.legabriel.com/), a place to go for lobster dinner. Both taste and price are great. The full course lobster dinner with a1.5 pounds of lobster was priced at $26.99/person before tax and gratitude.

Day 3: Cheticamp to Pleasant Bay, NS (Cabot Trail, Cape Breton Highlands National Park)
· Ticket at the Park Entrance: about 10 minutes drive from Cheticamp to the entrance of the Cape Breton Highlands National Park (http://www.pc.gc.ca/eng/pn-np/ns/cbreton/index.aspx). Got the tickets and park information at the entrance (The ticket was $20/family and valid until 4:00 pm next day).
· Hiking at the Skyline Trail, a Must-See! It was a half hour drive from the park entrance to the Skyline Trail (The Trail is about 7-10 km long and takes 2-3 hours to walk). The ocean view and headland overlooking at the end of this trail were absolutely dramatic and breathtaking. During the hiking, we saw 3 moose about 30 meters away. You could see black bears, wolves, and coyotes along the trail if you hike there quietly very early in the morning.
· Whale Watching and Whale Museum at Pleasant Bay. About one hour of driving from Skyline Trail to Pleasant Bay. Pleasant Bay is probably one of the best places for whale watching in the Cabot Trail area. There are 4 to 5 Whale Watching operators at the Pleasant Bay. We took Capt. Mark's Whale and Seal Cruise. We saw lots of pilot whales in a very close distance. At one time we could even touch the whales if we want/dare to. We also saw one dolphin and one seal. Zodiac is absolutely recommended for whale watching because it is faster and able to chase the whales and get you much closer to more whales. There is a small whale museum near the harbor and you could visit it while waiting for your boat. Free admission ticket available from the Capt. Mark’s (may be from other operators too).
· Stayed in a cottage at Pleasant Bay for the night.

Day 4: Pleasant Bay to Ingonish Bay, NS (Cabot Trail, Cape Breton Highlands National Park)
· Outlooks and short trails such as Sunrise, Neils Harbour, Black Brook Cove, and Green Cove on the way from Pleasant Bay to Ingonish Bay are all very picturesque.
· Drive with Caution and Pleasure! There are some steep, high, and zigzag uphill and downhill sections to drive over the North Mountain (457m) right after the Pleasant Bay. It is necessary to drive slowly and apply the low gear (L2 or L) there.
· Picnic lunch, swimming, and feeling the rhythm of the Atlantic Ocean at the Ingonish beach - the biggest and best beach in the Cape Breton Highlands National Park area.
· Stayed in the cottage (Knotty Pine Cottages). It is reasonably good and should be recommended. Especially, the bay view from the cottage’s deck is magnificent.

Day 5: Ingonish Bay, NS (Cabot Trail, Cape Breton Highland Park)
· Enjoyed barbecue at the cottage in the morning (BBQ stove is provided).
· Hiked at the Middle Head Trail (1.5 hour) in the afternoon.
· Visited the Ingonish beach again.

Day 6: Ingonish Bay to Baddeck NS (still on Cabot Trail)
· It is 4-5 hours of driving from Ingonish Beach to Baddeck.
· Outlook Cape Smoky. Worth to have a stop at this outlook but we have to drop the Cape Smoky Trail because it would take 4 hours and is too long for the kids.
· Bell Museum at Baddeck. It is very well designed with handful of audio and video documentations for both kids and adults to enjoy. The lake view from the Museum is also astonishing.
· Sailing boat tour on the Bras d’Or Lake was an exciting experience. If you like Kayak, instead, you can try Sea Kayak Baddeck (http://www.paddledog.ca/).
· Bought fresh lobsters at the harbor the same location for the sailing boat tour, beers, and other groceries in town.
· Lobster dinner cooked by ourselves at the cottage (Hunter's Mountain Chalets). This cottage should certainly be recommended at Baddeck. The rooms are clean, decent, and well decorated. The view from the room and font deck is marvelous. You can also try their Segway if you wish. The only reminder is that if you want to steam lobster, fish, or other smelly food, you should inform the owner. They will provide you with cookware to use outside.

Day 7: Baddeck to Peggy’s Cove & Halifax
· It is about 5 hours of driving from Baddeck to Peggy’s Cove.
· Enjoyed the Peggy’s Cove for 3 hours and then drove to the hotel in Halifax.
· Seafood dinner at Halifax’s water front.

Day 8: Halifax to Quebec City
· Magnetic Hill in Moncton. On the way back to Quebec, we visited the Magnetic Hill. This visit is very convenient because the hill is located right beside the highway.

Day 9: Quebec City to Ottawa
· Toured the old Quebec City and the Montmorency falls
· Arrived home at 9:30pm.
