In the weeks before his parents hit the wall last spring, 19-year-old Phillippe Telford swallowed a handful of pills, wandered away from home and, during a hair-raising episode at 100 km/h on Highway 417, opened the car door and then removed his seatbelt in an effort to close it. On the last day of April, his desperate mother took her son — who is severely autistic, has diabetes and needs constant supervision — to a developmental services office and dropped him off, saying she and her husband could not longer keep him safe. She told him he was going to camp. That act made a difference to the Telfords’ lives. Their son is now in care, although it is a temporary solution while a long-term one is being worked out. Telford said she sees him often and he is happy.
