Increase in orphaned and injured wildlife comes at high cost to sanctuary

OTTAWA — The Rideau Valley Wildlife Sanctuary is looking for public support as the number of orphaned and injured wildlife animals admitted to the rehabilitation centre climbs to more than 600 so far this year. The region’s only licensed rehabilitation facility for wild mammals and turtles has accepted 140 more animals in the first eight months of 2013 than it did in all of 2012. Thanks to a grant from the Community Foundation of Ottawa, donated constructed materials and volunteer labour, the organization was able to build more treatment rooms and an outdoor enclosure this year, giving the sanctuary the space to admit more animals.
