An Ottawa band named after a Canadian astronaut is being asked, via a “friendly” lawyer’s letter, to make sure the public doesn’t mistake the space hero with the rock ‘n’ rollers.
Roberta Bondar is the 69-year-old former astronaut and doctor who flew aboard the Discovery mission in 1992.
But Roberta Bondar is also an Ottawa rock band, comprised of Lidija Rozitis, Alex Maltby, Gary Franks and Tyler Goodman.
An official for Roberta Bondar’s charitable foundation says the foundation just wants to make sure there’s no public confusion between the astronaut and the Ottawa rock ‘n’ roll band of the same name.
Christine Yankou, a spokesperson for the Roberta Bondar foundation, which raises awareness about the environment, said Bondar has known about the band for some time. When Yankou, who monitors Bondar’s online presence, first found the band’s website, she says it was clearly labelled as a band.
But recently, she said, the band has started to blur the lines between the music and the muse, by referring to itself as only Roberta Bondar.
“Now, we got confusion,” Yanko says. “This is getting to be a problem.”
In order to rectify this solution, Yanko had a lawyer send a “very friendly letter” asking the band to make it clear that they are in no way related to Bondar or her charitable foundation.
“Roberta’s not upset by it,” Yanko explained. “(Bondar and her lawyer) are not asking them to do anything, we’re just saying we’ve got to make it clear.”
Yanko said they’re perfectly willing to have the band use her name, but they just worry that it will cause confusion between Bondar’s speaking engagements and charitable work and the band’s loud rock ‘n’ roll.
“We don’t want them to be anything,” Yanko said. “But if they’re going to keep doing that they need to be the band, not Roberta Bondar the astronaut. They have to clarify between the two.”
Members of the band could not be reached for comment.
