Along highways and city streets, a wounded city united Friday to pay tribute to Cpl. Nathan Cirillo as new military sentries took their posts at the National War Memorial, where Cirillo was gunned down Wednesday.
To the skirl of a lone piper and borne by kilted soldiers from his regiment, the slain Hamilton reservist was loaded into a hearse on Hunt Club Road.
The soldier’s mother, Kathy Cirillo, accompanied his body as it left the McEvoy-Shields funeral home, escorted by members of his regiment, Hamilton’s Argyll and Sutherland Highlanders.
A Hamilton city police cruiser led the 12-car procession, which was flanked by police motorcycles, back to his Hamilton home along the Highway of Heroes.
