An Eastern Ontario man pulled a trapped driver from a burning vehicle moments before the car became fully engulfed, police say.

Ontario Provincial Police said Tuesday that officers responded to a single-car crash on Green Bay Road in South Frontenac Township on Oct. 24.

According to police, at just after 8 p.m., a car man rolled off an embankment, flipped upside-down, and caught fire.

“The lone male occupant was observed in the driver’s seat and was not able to exit the vehicle by himself,” police said in a news release.

A nearby resident who heard the crash came to the driver’s rescue, pulling him out through the driver’s side window and helping him up the embankment just before flames engulfed the vehicle, police said.

Police say the motorist, who had been alone in the car, was taken to hospital and treated for minor injuries.

Police said 31-year-old Cory Schell of Haliburton, Ont., has been charged with impaired driving and driving with a blood-alcohol level greater than .08.

Schell is to appear in court in Kingston on Nov. 20.
