Members of the Ottawa police force are today remembering Const. Eric Czapnik, who was killed while on duty five years ago.

Police officers will gather privately Monday night for what they are calling a “toast” and “celebration of life” for Czapnik.

They will assemble at a poignant location — the Ottawa Hospital’s Civic campus. It was there that Czapnik was fatally stabbed by former RCMP officer Kevin Gregson in the parking lot on Dec. 29, 2009.

On Monday, the force posted a photo of Czapnik on the Ottawa Police Twitter account with a post “On this day we #remember Eric Czapnik, an officer who died in the line of duty.”

They also posted a link http://bit.ly/1yyUIhK to an Ottawa police web page that honours officers killed in the line of duty.

Police say that the vigilance for the safety of their members has been top of mind ever since the death and even more so this year, as Czapnik’s memorial comes on the heels of slaying of two New York City police officers, who were shot while sitting in their patrol car in Brooklyn on Dec. 20.
