South meets North through education and song in the coming months as 30 members of the Ottawa Children’s Choir travel to Iqaluit, Nunavut, to share music and community with local youth. During a one-week stay in May, OCC choristers and the Inuksuk Drum Dancers will lead workshops in local schools, participate in community activities and perform a specially commissioned piece of music, written to represent the North/South collaboration.

In late June, the Inuksuk Drum Dancers will visit Ottawa, experiencing daily life in the city, taking part in teambuilding and leadership activities, and performing during the national Unisong festival on Canada Day.

This project receives its funding through grants and community support. A gala fundraising dinner will be held at 7 p.m. on Saturday, Feb. 28 at Michael Blackie’s newest restaurant, Next Dining, in Stittsville.

Guests will enjoy delicacies from the kitchen of renowned chef Blackie and will be entertained by guitarist Lucas Haneman, along with pianists Sally Robinson and Nick Rodgerson. A silent auction will also take place, with a wide range of donated items. Some 100 community and cultural leaders will attend.

Gala tickets are $100 each (tax receipt for $40), available online at www.eventbrite.ca/e/nkvu-tickets-15491352051 or NKVUinfo@gmail.com.
