The region’s police forces will be targeting distracted driving and unsafe lane changes throughout March as part of their latest selective traffic enforcement program (STEP).

According to a news release, distracted driving was to blame for 23,283 collisions resulting in 6,463 injuries and 18 fatalities between 2009 and 2013.

During the same period, unsafe lane changes were cited in 5,651 collisions resulting in 625 injuries and two fatalities, police said.

The STEP program targets two specific traffic violations for special attention the Gatineau and Ottawa police services each month.

In January, it was drivers who follow too closely and stop sign violations while February was aimed at drivers running red lights and passenger seatbelt use.

April will focus on school related safety and cycling safety.
