The Children’s Hospital of Eastern Ontario plans to cut as many as 50 positions as it copes with an anticipated $6.7-million shortfall in its 2015-16 budget.

Most of the cuts will come through attrition, voluntary retirement or reassignment, the hospital said in a news release Wednesday. The cuts of between 40 and 50 jobs amount to between two and three per cent of the hospital’s 1,750 employees.

Provincial funding cuts means CHEO will get less money overall and no money to pay for the negotiated 1.4 per cent pay increase for unionized employees, the hospital said. CHEO’s 2015-16 budget is $243 million.

The hospital’s funding has been frozen or reduced every year since 2012, the hospital said. Wednesday’s cuts are part of more than 100 cost-cutting initiatives the hospital has implemented to meet its obligation to balance its budget.

“The CHEO team remains committed to meeting this challenge together and continuing to deliver the highest quality of patient care to its patients and their families,” CHEO CEO Alex Munter said in the release.

More to come.
