Ottawa bars are banding together in support of Alexander Sanghwan.
Sanghwan, 22, was the victim of a hit-and-run on March 30 while attending a music festival in Miami. He suffered multiple broken bones, a head injury, and potential long-term nerve and brain damage.
The Ottawa native is currently in an induced coma at Jackson Memorial Hospital in Miami.
Dreammind Group, which runs a number of bars and restaurants across Ontario, has launched a fundraising campaign for Sanghwan entitled “Raise for Alex.” Sanghwan’s employer, Tequila Jacks, is part of the Dreammind group.
Raise for Alex is hosting a fundraising night on April 15 at Flybar in the Market. The event begins at 9 p.m.
All proceeds from the night, including tips, coat check and bar sales, are going directly to the campaign according to Terry Morin, the marketing manager at Tequila Jack’s.
“We have big family values within our company,” said Morin, “so we’re using our entire army to fundraise for him.”
He said that includes bars and restaurants in both Toronto and Ottawa.
Morin said “every staff member is going to be there, and every staff member is promoting and pushing hard for this event.”
Sanghwan had been bartending at Tequila Jacks for six months when the accident happened. He is a recent graduate of the University of Ottawa.
Morin said Ottawa is a tight knit community, which is why it was so important to support the cause.
In addition to the bar night, Dreammind Group has created an online fundraising campaign.
Funds from the campaign will go toward paying Sanghwan’s medical bills so that his family can focus on recovery, according to the fundraising page.
More information about the campaign can be found at http://www.gofundme.com/RaiseForAlex.
