Ottawa firefighters were called Tuesday night to pull a woman out of the Rideau Canal after she went for a swim near Somerset Street.
Passersby called 911 just before 7 p.m. to report a woman “in trouble” in the canal which, while almost filled, has not officially opened for the season.
But firefighters arriving at the scene discovered she had gone in voluntarily and in no danger. They pulled her from the water anyway.
Paramedics called to the scene declared the woman to be fine.
Ottawa police had been called but cancelled their response when advised the woman was safe and sound.
A city bylaw forbids swimming in the canal but the city was unable to immediately confirm whether a ticket was issued.
