The jobless rate in the Ottawa region dropped to 6.6 per cent in April, from 6.9 per cent in April, breaking a four-month string in which the National Capital Region unemployment rate was higher than Canada’s.

The drop is not a sign of employment strength, however. Instead, the change is mostly due to a drop of 3,200 in the labour force, while the number of jobs dropped by 900.

Sector by sector, public administration had 143,000 jobs in May, the same as in April. Construction jobs were up by 2,700 and professional services jobs were up 1,900.

The the high-tech sector, the number of jobs was down to 38,400, from 39,500 in in April, the lowest since late 1990s. The federal government employment was flat at 123,300.

Nationally, a surge in private sector employment added 58,900 jobs inMay, but the national unemployment rate in May remained locked at 6.8 per cent for the fourth-straight month.
