A young Ottawa basketball star being courted by U.S. colleges has been charged in a Saturday morning hit-and-run that left an off-duty police officer in hospital with serious injuries.

Edward “Eddie” Ekiyor, 18, is charged with leaving the scene of an accident and criminal negligence causing bodily harm. Ekiyor, who is days away from attending a prep school in New Hampshire, was granted bail on Sunday.

According to his release conditions, he is required to live at his surety’s home until he attends the high school to play basketball.

Ottawa police detective Val Curcio, 51, was struck by a car from behind while she was on a Saturday morning bike ride in Barrhaven. She was taken to hospital with injuries described as serious but not life-threatening.

Police say Curcio, who works in the fraud unit, will be in hospital for some time but is expected to make a full recovery.

Police say Ekiyor fled the scene and was later arrested.

Anyone with information about the accident is asked to contact Ottawa police collision investigators at 613-236-1222, ext. 2481, or Crime Stoppers at 613-233-8477.
