On one of the hottest days of the summer, 24 young women between the ages of 15 and 19 showed their stuff at Camp FFIT at the Ottawa Fire Services Training Division Building on Industrial Avenue.

Camp FFIT (Female Firefighters In Training) gives young women a unique taste of what it’s like to be a firefighter. Now in its sixth year, the program receives more than 50 applications. It’s the result of a partnership between Ottawa Fire Services and Fire Service Women of Ontario – a non-profit association of career women and volunteers from across Ontario.

Running from August 17 to 21, the camp lets the teens experience some of the duties of an Ottawa firefighter. It gives young women the self-confidence to explore a career in one of the most reputable public service professions.

Skills covered include:

  • Basic Firefighting
  • Team building
  • Use of SCBA – Self Contained Breathing Apparatus
  • Basics of Pump/Ladder operations
  • Fitness and Nutrition Information
  • Aerial ladder climb
  • Auto Extrication
  • Basics of technical rescue

For more information on Camp FFIT, see the City of Ottawa’s site.
