Police handed out 91 tickets Tuesday in a one-day blitz that targeted drivers caught texting or talking on cellphones.

The combined Ottawa Police, OPP and RCMP “distracted driver” operation also nabbed 43 drivers for other traffic violations.

According to the latest (2013) statistics, 40 per cent of collisions in Ottawa were the result of distracted driving.

“Drivers may be aware of some dangers, like drinking and driving, but they may not realize that other behaviours and distractions also pose a threat to their safety,” said Sgt. Denis Hull of the Ottawa police traffic division.

“Do not use your phone when driving, even when stopped at traffic lights.”

The minimum fine for distracted driving is $265, but fines can be higher depending on previous traffic offences.
