After all the local federal Conservative candidates blew off a meeting with Ottawa Mayor Jim Watson last week, two made it to a second attempt Monday morning.

Carleton candidate Pierre Poilievre — the senior Ottawa minister in the Tory government — and Ottawa South candidate Dev Balkissoon went into Watson’s City Hall boardroom first thing Monday for a briefing on the city’s views on federal policies that affect it, including transit funding, social housing and economic development.

Conservative Leader Stephen Harper is in town, Poilievre said as he went in, and maybe the other invited candidates decided attending an event with him was a higher priority.

Poilievre’s and Watson’s staff worked together to find a new date for the briefing after zero candidates showed up for one last Tuesday. Watson has had similar meetings with local Liberal candidates (nine attended) and Greens (11 candidates and one riding-association president went). A session for local New Democratic Party candidates is scheduled for Sept. 3.
