Capital region jobless rate up slightly in August, first increase in four months

The National Capital Region’s jobless rate was up slightly in August to 6.5 per cent from 6.4 per cent in July.

The region added 1,500 jobs during the month but the labour force increased by 1,900.

It was the first rise in the capital region’s jobless rate after four straight months of decline.

The region’s high-tech sector finally broke a string of 11 monthly declines. Employment in the sector in August was up to 38,000, compared with 35,700 in July.

The number of federal government jobs in the capital region was up 1,500 in August to 127,000. The tally a year ago was was 138,500.

Most of the federal government hiring in August took place outside capital region, where the sector showed a net rise of of 5,700 jobs over the July figures.

Meanwhile, nationally, Canada gained 12,000 jobs in August, bolstered by a gain in full-time employment, but more people were looking for work and the unemployment rate ticked higher for the first time in months, Statistics Canada reported.
