Capital taxi drivers have rejected a contract offer from Coventry Connections, but company officials were quick to note that the rejection has no bearing on the current tense situation with locked out airport fleet cabbies.

Hanif Patni, the owner of Coventry Connections, said late Wednesday that unionized Capital Taxi drivers turned downed a company offer to lower dispatch fees to $425 a month from $459 as insufficient.

Despite the contract rejection, the Capital Taxi drivers will continue to work without a contract, at least for the time being, he said, adding that drivers who continue to pay their dispatch fees will get work, while those who don’t won’t.

“We have to work our way to the contract process, (but) here will be no disruption of service,” Patni said, emphasizing that the contract issue with Capital Taxi drivers is “unrelated” to the ongoing dispute with airport taxi drivers that has seen traffic disruption and some violence along the Airport Parkway over the last month.

Capital Taxi has just over 300 cars.
