A Liberal candidate in eastern Quebec is asking for a recount.

Liberal candidate Marie-Josée Normand lost to the Conservatives' Bernard Généreux by 265 votes in the riding of Montmagny-L'Islet-Kamouraska-Rivière-du-Loup.

Out of 50,000 ballots, 815 were rejected according to Normand's campaign co-chair, Eric Couillard.

"There are things that lead us to believe that there were irregularities in the procedure," he said.

Couillard also said about 40 ballot boxes in the riding were not closed properly.

The recount process could take several days, according to Couillard.

Généreux lost the riding by the skin of his teeth in 2011 to the NDP's François Lapointe.

Back in 2011, Généreux was initially declared the winner but a recount found he'd lost by 9 votes.
