Pack your picnic baskets, grab your gingham blankets and head out to the Ottawa River — the Alexandra Bridge is set to be transformed for one day on July 2, 2017 to a grassy lawn fit to host hundreds of hungry Ottawa and Gatineau picnic-goers.

As part of the year-long celebrations to mark the 150th anniversary of Canada’s Confederation, crews will work overnight to lay sod on the entire length of the interprovincial bridge’s west-facing wooden boardwalk, which is usually reserved for pedestrians and cyclists. Traffic lanes will be closed for the day to regular drivers; two of the lanes will be set aside for pedestrians and cyclists and two others for emergency vehicles.

The soaring bridge deck offers a breathtaking view of the Parliament Buildings, Nepean Point, the Canadian Museum of History and the Ottawa River, and is seen by organizers as a symbolic link between Ontario and Quebec.

“It’s a great way to show the friendship we have between Ottawa and Gatineau,” said Mayor Jim Watson, who was joined on the bridge for Monday’s announcement by Gatineau Mayor Maxime Pedneaud-Jobin.

Groups will be able to book a square of lawn through the Ottawa 2017 Bureau’s website starting in July 2016. There will be will a nominal fee — Watson suggested $5 to $10 — and the choice of three seatings. Up to 650 groups are to be accommodated at each seating.

The budget for the picnic is about $50,000. The sod is being donated and will be given away to local groups following the festivities.

The picnic-on-a-bridge idea was inspired by a similar event in Sydney, Australia.
