Catherine McKenna’s meteoric political career continued apace Wednesday as she was named environment minister in the Liberal cabinet of Prime Minister Justin Trudeau.
McKenna is the only Ottawa MP to join cabinet, which will mean that she’s likely to assume responsibility for the National Capital Commission.
The cabinet posting is a rich reward for McKenna, who engineered a stunning election night upset of popular NDP MP Paul Dewar in Ottawa Centre.
As environment minister, McKenna will lead a Canadian delegation to Paris later this month for a critical United Nations meeting on climate change to negotiate new cuts in greenhouse gas emissions.
Louise Comeau, executive director of Climate Action Network Canada, welcomed McKenna’s appointment at what she called a critical moment in the international effort to limit the damage wrought by climate change.
“It really speaks well to the prime minister’s commitment to try to unlock the international negotiations on climate change,” she said. “Her (McKenna’s) experience around, not just social justice issues, but human rights issues, developing country issues, that’s really going to be helpful.”
Comeau said international negotiations have bogged down as governments wrestle with the concerns of developing countries that want help in dealing with the impact of climate change on their environments and economies.
Born in Hamilton, McKenna, studied international relations at the London School of Economics before earning a law degree from McGill University. She has practiced law in both Ottawa and Jakarta, Indonesia, focusing on international trade, competition, investment and constitutional issues.
She co-founded and led a charitable organization, Canadian Lawyers Abroad (now known as Level) and later became executive director of the Banff Forum, a non-profit aimed at raising the level of policy debate in Canada.
