Children in Haiti who have speech development difficulties will soon receive 14 Android tablets to help them communicate.
The donation comes from the University of Ottawa’s Brain and Mind Research Institute. It adapted the tablets to help stroke victims who have trouble communicating.
A charity that works with disabled children, Team Canada Healing Hands, is will present the tablets to the Papaza Centre, a Haitian centre for children with special needs.
The tablets are loaded with apps that can help children with speech development difficulties communicate simple concepts such as like colours, as well as more complicated word production.
Karen Mallet, a speech language pathologist, left Ottawa with the devices on Thursday. She will work with children and administrators at the Papaza Centre.
Team Canada Healing Hands notes that in Haiti, “persons with disability are typically among the very poorest; they experience poverty more intensely and have fewer opportunities to escape poverty than non-disabled people.”
