He’s just skin and bones, but a four-year-old boxer mix had life-saving good luck on Friday the 13th when an SPCA patroller found him starving in the woods near Shawville.

He weighs 16 kilograms and should weigh 35 kg, say staffers at the SPCA de l’Outaouais who are amazed that he can even stand. Once rescued, he fell asleep in their arms.

A stray and starving boxer found in the woods near Shawville has been named Treize, for the lucky Friday the 13th that he was rescued.

They named him Treize (French for 13). His origin is unknown; no one in this region has listed such a dog as missing in recent months.

“There are no sign of violence,” said Karine Dunnigan, assistant director of the SPCA. They don’t know whether he was mistreated or just got lost, possibly even travelling from hundreds of kilometres away. “But he has been a stray for a long time.”

“It’s going to take months. We’re talking about a very long, difficult recovery,” she said. For the moment he’s being rehydrated and fed — but very slowly.

“The dog is really hungry but we can only give him a little spoonful” at a time because his stomach can’t handle a full meal.

His muscles have dwindled to almost nothing. “He’s just a skeleton with skin. It’s unbelievable.

“He’s really affectionate. We can see he’s grateful to be here,” she said.

The first thing the workers did was to give him a warm bath after his weeks or months in the open. They gave him an IV line for fluid as he slept.

“We said this (Friday the 13th) is not a lucky day, but it’s his lucky day because we found him and gave him the care he needs,” she said.

Treize walked out of some woods along Highway 303 near Shawville as an SPCA patroller was going for a walk. Man and dog looked at each other. The patroller realized this dog was in trouble, and Treize didn’t show any sign of hostility. “He was just really happy to be picked up.”

His medical chart isn’t short. Dehydration. Weak bones. Anemia. Some cuts around his hips and knees. Possible protein deficiency, worms, other parasites. They have ordered some tests to get the full picture.

“He should be able to get through this,” Dunnigan said. “He has a surprising amount of determination. A dog his size should be stretched out on the ground, too weak to get up. But we come near his cage and he stands up to see us.”
