The Sandy Hill area is on the lookout for a skunk is wandering around with its head stuck in a large jar — potentially a sentence of slow death for the animal.

“It has been reported as a big skunk so hopefully it’s not emaciated yet. It would be a terrible death,” said Heather Badenoch of the Rideau Valley Wildlife Sanctuary.

“We would love to know where this skunk is so we can save its life.”

It’s not rare for a skunk to get stuck while looking for food in garbage or recycling bins, she said.

The skunk was spotted near Russell Avenue and Somerset Street early Friday. Normally skunks are nocturnal.

“You need two people to approach it, try to pull the jar off, (and) if it’s not an easy thing then try to get a recycling bin to put over it,” she said. Someone has to sit on the bin to keep the skunk until the Ottawa Humane Society can send help.

Badenoch has experience handling skunks. She helped free one that had a sharp-edge tin can on its head.

“It’s probably quite disoriented so it might not even be cognizant. If someone is approaching it might not even see,” she said.

The theory and practice of jar removal from skunks go as follows:

“You approach them and hold a big blanket out in front of you as you’re approaching. You need two people. Another person who has a towel would in theory shoot in and wrap the towel around the skunk. Try to tuck the tail under or at least capture the tail because that is where the spray would come from.”

The towel should also wrap up the animal’s claws.

“Then try to get the jar off.” If it’s too difficult, she says, it’s best to call for help.

“We have notified (Humane Society) so they know that this skunk is out there.”

“At the sanctuary we take in 800 to 900 orphaned and injured wildlife every year,” she said. ” have found skunks and brought them in. We deal with skunks all the time.”

Badenoch offers to come herself if needed. Messages about the skunk’s location can go to Rideau Wildlife’s Twitter account, @rideauwildlife.

“I realize not everyone wants to stand in front of a skunk,” she said.

She says it’s not as difficult as people think to get rid of the smell if a skunk does spray. She recommends a home-made mix of hydrogen peroxide, soap and baking soda, mixed fresh at the time it is used.

“Getting sprayed becomes a thing that you learn how to deal with,” she said.
