No, that’s not a real Ottawa police officer phoning and asking for your credit card number.
The familiar scam is back, Ottawa police say: Nothing sophisticated, just someone pretending to be a worthy charity in order to steal credit card numbers. Christmas is a popular time for charity scams.
The police have put out a reminder that they never solicit donations.
They suggest that people who want to give money should do so by phoning a charity directly or going to its website.
And if the phony police canvasser calls you, the real police fraud unit wants to hear about it at 613-236-1222, extension 5162. Anonymous tips can be submitted to Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-8477 (TIPS), or by downloading the Ottawa police app.
