The jobless rate in the national capital region was steady at 6.3 per cent in November, from October, despite the loss of some 4,800 jobs, Statistics Canada reported Friday.

The agency said the region’s labour force declined by about the same number.

Public administration jobs in the region were steady at 145,100 in November, compared with 145,000 in October. The November tally was also the same as a year ago.

Drilling into the public admin jobs data for capital region, federal government employment in November was 131,500, versus 130,800 in October.

Losing categories in the region’s job market in November from October were finance and insurance (down 3,300 jobs), construction (down 2,300 jobs) and professional services (down 4,100 jobs).

Weaknesses in the tech sector were still a puzzle: StatsCan’s November tally was 39,800 jobs, versus 41,200 in October and well off the the 48,200 employed in the sector a year ago.

Nationally, StatsCan reported the Canadian economy lost about 35,700 jobs in November, bumping the jobless rate up to 7.1 per cent.
