The westbound Highway 401 is expected to remain closed most of the afternoon near Mallorytown, about 90 minutes south of Ottawa, as Canada Post workers pick up letters and packages spilled onto the roadway following a serious crash between two tractor-trailers early Saturday.
Police say the collision occurred at about 4 a.m. when two tractor-trailers collided in the westbound lanes near mile marker 680, in Front of Yonge township.
Both drivers were taken to hospital, one of them in critical condition, officials said.
One of the tractor trailer carrying mail split in half, strewing the contents for about 100 metres. By noon, at least two Canada post trucks and a number of workers were on the scene gathering the mail.
Officials also said the trucks both split their fuel tanks.
The police investigation continues.
