The National Capital Commission is encouraging Canadians to take to Twitter, Facebook or Instagram to share their big ideas for the future of Canada’s capital.

The NCC wants its Plan for Canada’s Capital, a planning framework for the next 50 years now under development, to include 17 “major milestone projects” that will transform the capital region between 2017 and 2067.

“The milestone projects will span multiple political and economic cycles, and are meant to ensure that the nature and character of the seat of the government of Canada continues to reflect the country throughout the 21st century,” the NCC said in a release Tuesday.

Completing the updated long-term plan, which will be launched in 2017, is one of the NCC’s six corporate priorities. The Crown corporation has been working on the plan for five years and held public consultations on it across Canada.

In an interview with the Citizen last April, chief executive Mark Kristmanson revealed that the NCC already had a list of about 25 big ideas, many suggested during the public consultations.

Kristmanson wouldn’t reveal what they were, but shared a big idea of his own: a makeover of Confederation Square to coincide with the centennial of the National War Memorial in 2039. Kristmanson would like to redo the square to give it the amenities and sight lines to accommodate up to 30,000 people during national celebrations.

According to the NCC, the 2017-2067 plan will:

  • Outline a vision for the use of federal lands, buildings, parks, transportation facilities and symbolic spaces in the capital;
  • Ensure the capital remains nationally significant and supportive of federal institutions;
  • And identify strategic principles and key projects that will reflect Canada’s growth as a nation.

Anyone wishing to share their big ideas for the capital on social media should use the hashtag #Capital2067 or visit the NCC’s website, ncc-ccn.gc.ca.
