Christmas is coming a bit early for employees at Ottawa’s Shopify Inc. The online retail specialist announced Monday that it will give each of its workers $1,000 to spend at any of Shopify’s Internet-based merchants.

The bonus, which will cost the company about $1 million up front, is a new twist on Shopify’s annual tradition of thanking employees for their efforts over the year.

Last year, workers were given $1,000 to spend on travel. In 2013, in an homage to its roots, the company took over Mont Tremblant for a two-day ski and snowboard holiday. Shopify was founded as an online snowboard retailer before changing its focus to offer tools to people who sell online.

“Every year we do a gift for our employees. This year we wanted to bring two things together that we really care about, our merchants and our employees,” said Konval Matin, culture lead at Shopify.

The money spent by employees will remain within the ecosystem that Shopify has created for its clients. More than 200,000 clients, including Tesla, Wu-Tang Clan and comics and articles site The Oatmeal, use Shopify’s software and services to sell goods.

Shopify has nearly 1,000 employees in Ottawa, Toronto, Waterloo and California. It said staff were quickly filling up internal chat services with suggestions on how to best spend their windfall.

In providing employees with a Christmas gift, Shopify is bucking the trend. According to a recent survey by U.K.-based online recruitment firm OnRec, 53 per cent of responding companies said they have done away with end-of-year bonuses.

Even Christmas parties could be going the way of the dodo. OnRec’s survey said 40 per cent of employers had no plans to host a get-together for employees this year.
