Ready for your five minutes of fame? Ottawa’s #ottmusik is looking for original music from local bands and singers tor the enjoyment of residents waiting on hold on the city’s 311 information service.
“The response from residents and the music community to last year’s #ottmusik was incredible, and we wanted to recreate that enthusiasm for local music by relaunching the initiative in 2016,” said Mayor Jim Watson in a statement released Monday.
Music can be vocal or instrument and in any style or language. Musicians can submit music on ottawa.ca until February 15.
In March, a list of all the applicants will be featured on the website. The winning tracks will be chosen by a jury of professional musicians and music industry professionals from the Ottawa area. Up to 25 songs will be chosen, and they will play in a loop on the City’s telephone system for 12 months.
Last year’s competition attracted 217 entries and the winners got modest $200 licensing fees — and the exposure.
How much exposure does #ottmusik offer? In November, the city’s auditor general Ken Hughes released a report on the centralized contact centre. There were about 500,000 calls to 311 in 2014. The service aims to answer 80 per cent of calls within 120 seconds.
Here’s a rundown of the musicians currently playing on 311. Have a listen.
