Condolences and fond reminiscences marked the news that former CFRA host Bev McRae had died.
The wife of a well-known Ottawa journalist, the late Earl McRae, Bev McRae was a regular fill-in host on the radio station in the late 1990s and early 2000s. She was also the host of a popular show, The Broad Perspectives.
McRae died unexpectedly but peacefully last Wednesday, her family said. She was 70 years old.
Those who knew her offered high praise for her as both a journalist and a friend.
“She was one of the finest writers I ever knew, a consummate professional,” Barrhaven Coun. Jan Harder said Monday, recalling how McRae once worked for her.
“Sorry to learn of the passing of Bev McRae,” MPP Lisa MacLeod posted on McRae’s Facebook page. “She was a kind woman who gave me a job on Sunday mornings on an old CFRA show The Broad Perspectives.”
“Bev was a lovely soul, so bright and a trailblazer, too,” posted Wendy Daniels.
“I always enjoyed listening to her,” said another Facebook poster, Trina Constantini-Powell.
McRae, who was originally from Saskatoon, Sask., studied journalism at Carleton University, receiving a Master’s degree in 1997. Besides her stints at CFRA, she also worked as a reporter for the Barrhaven Independent and the Manotick Messenger.
A funeral will be held at Pinecrest Remembrance Chapel on Saturday at 11 a.m.
In lieu of flowers, the family says donations can be made to the Ottawa Humane Society, The Ottawa Mission, the Canadian Cancer Society or the Barrhaven Food Cupboard.
