Environment Canada now says the approaching storm is going to coat Ottawa with a thick layer of ice that will bring down wires and cause “extensive” power failures.

The department warned Wednesday morning that “15 to 20 millimetres of freezing rain are quite possible tonight, with significant ice buildup on exposed structures becoming an issue to deal with.

“Travel is not recommended. Surfaces such as highways, roads, walkways and parking lots will become icy, slippery and extremely hazardous. Poor weather conditions are likely to contribute to long-lasting transportation delays.

“Beware of branches or electrical wires that could break under the weight of ice. Extended and widespread utility outages are possible.”

By comparison, the ice storm of 1998 (also an El Niño year) brought Ottawa some 67 mm of freezing rain, and none of it melted. That was a storm from Texas too.

This storm will bring snow and ice pellets for much of the day but switch to rain around evening, the forecast says.

“Latest indications suggest the freezing rain will last for much of tonight before slowly changing over to rain by (Thursday) morning as temperatures edge above the zero degree mark.”

All school buses serving the Catholic District School Board of Eastern Ontario and the Upper Canada District School Board are cancelled Wednesday.
