Elgin Street at the Highway 417 overpass remained closed to traffic on Thursday after Ministry of Transportation engineers removed a barrier wall on the westbound 417 off-ramp at Metcalfe Street.
Police closed Elgin between Catherine and Isabella streets around noon Wednesday as the MTO began investigating the possibility of a segment of the concrete wall of the overpass shifting.
The bridge is safe with an inspection finding no problem with the deck or supports, an MTO spokeswoman said.
The site is secured and temporary repairs, which are expected to take several days, are underway, she said. The left lane of the Highway 417 off-ramp at Metcalfe Street was re-opened to traffic Wednesday night, but the right lane remains closed.
The cause of the situation is under investigation.
