The National Capital Commission wants to improve the shoreline of Meech Lake and restore Des Fées Lake in Gatineau Park.

The NCC board received an update on the ecosystems in the park. Staff reported the park is in “good” condition – an improvement from the “acceptable” grade in 2006 – but they flagged a few areas for concern.

The shorelines of Meech Lake and Des Fées Lake have degraded, and the water quality at Des Fées isn’t as good as Pink, Kingsmere, Philippe, La Peche and Meech lakes. In fact, the NCC labelled the water at Des Fées “poor.” The indicators include the number of frogs at the lake and the quantity of invasive species.

The NCC is also concerned more “unofficial” trails are being carved out by users of the park. CEO Mark Kristmanson said there are now more unofficial trails than official trails.

The study of Gatineau Park’s ecosystem involved measuring 10 years of data. It will feed into the park master plan, which is scheduled to be done by 2021.

NCC working on 2017 programs, finalize international pavilion

NCC staff continue planning events to celebrate Canada’s 150th birthday in 2017.

The new building at 7 Clarence St. will become the international pavilion with 12 diplomatic missions participating in the program starting next February. The missions are the United States, Mongolia, Swiss Confederation, Switzerland, Netherlands, Israel, Republic of Poland, Germany, Cuba, Ireland, Belgium, Hungary and Philippines.

The NCC is planning Confederation “pavilions” at several buildings it owns.

There are several visioning plans being applied to the celebration year. The illumination plan, which endeavours to apply striking lighting features in the core, will be in its first year. Confederation Boulevard, the ceremonial road network through Ottawa and Gatineau, will get a facelift with new streetscape features.

A new tulip species will also be introduced for the 2017 celebrations.
