The Petawawa-based infantry soldier accused of sexually assaulting and videotaping women without their knowledge has pleaded guilty.
Derrick Gallagher, 33, appeared in Pembroke court Tuesday to plead guilty to six sexual assaults and three voyeurism charges. He was initially charged with more than 20 offences.
Police said they undertook exhaustive investigative measures to find potential victims since some of them may not have realized they had been sexually assaulted because they were drugged.
They tracked down hotels where assaults are alleged to have occurred. They used surveillance video and check-in records in an attempt to identify potential victims. In some cases, police had only the first name of an alleged victim and an Internet or text message chat to go on.
On a computer seized from Gallagher’s home, police found videos of him chatting on Skype with women he met on dating websites. Police said Gallagher was a “voracious” user of dating websites.
OPP began to investigate after a woman went to the police with information. Police would not say whether that woman was one of the alleged victims.
The military said after Gallagher joined in 2005, he completed training at CFB Borden, Ont., from January to March, 2006, and in Meaford, Ont., from April to July of the same year. Both locations are north of Toronto.
