Several hundred people gathered Saturday at Somerset Square, at Wellington and Somerset streets, to honour Abdirahman Abda before beginning a protest march to police headquarters on Elgin Street.

Abdi, 37, died following a confrontation with police Sunday in front of his apartment building on Hilda Street.

Several speakers from the family and various organizations described the Somali-Canadian as gentle soul.

There were also calls for “a full and open investigation” by the provincial Special Investigations Unit, which is reviewing the case.

The loud but peaceful protest moved along Somerset shortly before 2 p.m. for the 3.5-kilometre trip to police headquarters.

Protesters in Montreal had staged a march for Abdi on Thursday evening.

March marshals and police worked to ensure a minimum of conflict along the route.
