The National Capital region’s unemployment rate tumbled to 6.6 per cent in July from June’s 6.9 per cent.

The drop was due to an increase of 3,500 jobs, while the labour force was up by only 1,800 workers.

However, the rates were strikingly different on either side of the Ottawa River.

The jobless rate in Ottawa was 6.3 per cent in July, down from 6.7 per cent in June, while the pattern was reversed in the Gatineau region, where the rate was 7.5 per cent in July compared with 7.3 per cent in June.

High-tech is on a roll in the capital region, employing 47,700 in July, up 3,200 from June. That’s the fourth straight monthly rise and the highest level in 20 months.

Drilling into sectors, professional services and hospitality sectors were up in the capital region, while public administration jobs in the capital region were steady in July compared with June.

Nationally, Canada’s economy lost 31,200 jobs in July, the biggest one-month drop in five years, and far worse than analysts had estimated.

The national unemployment rate also rose, to 6.9 per cent from 6.8 per cent in June.

More to come
